I'm running 100K in October

I’m taking part in the Run 100K in October Challenge to raise much needed funds for Women’s Aid.

Across Ireland one in three women live with suffocating abuse from someone they once loved; someone they once trusted. Every 5 minutes, someone reaches out to Women’s Aid for information and support.

Your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate a lot or a little, anything helps. I hope you can support me by donating whatever you can. By supporting Women’s Aid you can change lives, and save lives.

Simply click the Donate button. All donations are processed securely. You can also share my page using Share options below. This is a great way to show your support.

Thanks so much for your support, it will bring hope, healing and the possibility of a brighter future for women and children.

Herself - worth a watch

Friday 3rd Oct

I recently watched Herself, the Irish film starring Clare Dunne, when it aired on RTÉ. It left a deep impression on me. The film captures so many of the hidden realities of domestic abuse—the manipulation, the constant fear, the panic, the loss of confidence, and the overwhelming sense of hopelessness. It also shows how difficult it can be to imagine a life beyond abuse and temporary accomodation: a safe space where a family can be peaceful, happy, and joyful.

What struck me most was how powerfully the story illustrates the resilience of women who face these circumstances, and the complexity of human emotions that can hold them back from seeking support. It’s a reminder that what might look like “just leaving” from the outside is, in reality, an incredibly difficult and dangerous path.

I was also reminded of this recently when I interviewed for a senior role in another not-for-profit supporting victims of abuse. In that process, I learned just how demanding the work is—not only the leadership challenges, but the risks and the pressures frontline staff face every day. These are extraordinary people, doing work that is both vital and under-resourced, often at personal cost.

So as I take on my 100km in October challenge, I’m not only fundraising for Women’s Aid and the women they support, but also for the staff who put themselves on the frontline of this issue every day. Their courage and dedication deserves recognition—and our support. Thank you for your donation.

Why I’m Running 100km in October for Women’s Aid

Wednesday 1st Oct

My first exposure to the realities of domestic violence came when I was invited to join an advisory group, Cosc, established by the Department of Justice. Our role was to raise awareness and help shape an advertising campaign that supported victims of domestic violence and guided bystanders on what actions they could take.

It was a sobering experience. I quickly realised just how complex this area is—the fine line between supporting and interfering, the need for a message that was both hard-hitting and practical, and the immense courage it takes for victims to seek help.

Since then, the stories we hear in the media continue to highlight the bravery of women coming forward, but also the many obstacles they face. Too often, it seems that the systems around them—society, the courts—are not stacked in their favour. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to try to protect your children and yourself in those circumstances, all while keeping life going, providing, and finding your way through what must feel like a fog of impossible challenges.

That’s why I’ve chosen to do my small part. Running 100km in October is nothing compared to what these women face, but it’s a way for me to support Women’s Aid—the organisation that stands beside them, every day, when they need it most.

If you can, please support my fundraising effort. Every contribution helps Women’s Aid to continue their vital work, and together, we can make sure fewer women feel alone in the face of abuse.
