I’m taking part in the Walk 100 Miles in September Challenge to raise much needed funds for Women’s Aid.

Across Ireland one in three women live with suffocating abuse from someone they once loved; someone they once trusted. Every 5 minutes, someone reaches out to Women’s Aid for information and support.

Domestic abuse is a crippling experience for those who are subjected to it. I once heard someone describe it as having a terrorist in the home or within a relationship dynamic, which makes sense given that the perpetrator of the crime often terrorises their victim, stripping them of their autonomy and human rights.

Women who are currently being or who have previously been emotionally, psychologically, financially, coercively, physically, sexually, and spiritually abused by their partners not only deserve proper justice - but also an army of advocates standing with them to ensure that they obtain this.

It is so important to me that as a society, we stand in solidarity with victim-survivors of this crime, and that we recognise the value of their lives and freedom.
